Shane played youths football with Tralee Dynamos in Kerry and first entered league football with Cork City in 2004. He made his debut at Cork in the Munster Senior Cup but after just eighteen months at Turner's Cross he embarked on a series of loan deals took him to Kilkenny City, Shamrock Rovers and Cobh Ramblers

In the summer of 2005 Pat Scully took Shane on loan at struggling First Division side, Kilkenny City. Shane's arrival helped the club to turn their fortunes around, eventually finishing fourth in the table, but he returned to Cork at the end of the season.

In July 2006 Pat Scully again took Shane on loan, this time to Shamrock Rovers, and he scored on his debut in a 1-1 draw away to Cobh Ramblers on July 15th. But he made just six league appearances before a broken leg, in a game against Athlone Town on August 15th, ended his time there.

Shane joined Ramblers on loan from Cork City for the 2007 season but stayed for two years, making 25 league appearances for the Cork club.

Shane played under Ian Foster at Galway United during 2009 and made 35 appearances for the Tribesmen before moving to St Patrick's Athletic for 2010. Shane made 28 league appearances in his first season at Richmond Park, scoring three goals. In February 2011 he signed a new contract at St Pats. but was immediately given a season long loan at Dundalk where he was re-united with former boss Foster.

Shane made 12 league appearances for Dundalk, scoring in a 3-2 win over Galway United on 11 March, but in July his loan spell at Dundalk was cut short and he returned to Richmond Park, making just 2 more league appearances that season. At the end of the season he moved west, signing for Pat Scully at Limerick FC for the start of the 2012 season.

He made his debut for Limerick in the opening night win over Finn Harps at Jackman Park on 2 March 2012 and made 15 league appearances, scoring twice, as the club won the First Division title and promotion to the Premier Division. But Shane left the club at the end of the season.
