Robbie started with UCD in 2000 at the age of just 17 and spent five years at Belfield. In his first full season with the club, he netted 11 times in 33 appearances, a season that also saw Robbie earn himself the ‘PFAI Young Player of the Year’ award. However, he went on to score just twice more in 42 appearances over the following two seasons, with 2003 seeing the College outfit suffer relegation. They were soon back in the Premier Division, however, as Robbie shot the Students to promotion by firing 12 goals in 30 league appearances during 2004.

Martin went on to score six times in the top flight during 2005, before transferring to Longford Town for a fee of €10,000 in early 2006. A disappointing spell there ended in late 2007, as Longford endured the pain of relegation as well as an FAI Cup final defeat to Cork City.

Having been repeatedly played on the left-wing by boss Alan Mathews during his time at Flancare Park, Dundalk manager John Gill offered Robbie a chance to revert to his preferred role of striker, and he signed for the Lilywhites in December 2007. He made his competitive debut for the club away to Shelbourne on 7 March 2008, and scored his first ever club goals with a double at home to Monaghan United just six days later.

At the start of 2009 he moved to Drogheda United where he made 23 league appearances. He added a further 5 league appearances at the start of 2010, scoring once in a 4-1 defeat away to Sporting Fingal. Robbie left Drogheda in the summer of 2010, moving on to play in the Leinster Senior League with Leixlip United where he was part of the squad that qualified for the 2013 FAI Cup.
