Darren played schoolboys football with St Joseph's Boys and made his international debut as a 14 year old in an under-age game away to the Netherlands. He went on to sign a four year contract at Manchester City, aged just 15, but a broken wrist three weeks later disrupted his progress and he returned to Ireland one year later.

In 2003 Darren was on the books at Kildare County before joining UCD on a scholarship in 2004. Pete Mahon gave darren his senior debut that season and he made 15 appearances for the Students in his debut season. He went on to make 88 consecutive appearances for the club and spent the next three and a half years at Belfield.

In January 2008 Darren signed for Derry City but again suffered a wrist injury and only made made 4 appearances for the Candystripes that year. In 2009 Darren went out on loan to Sporting Fingal where he made 30 appearances for Liam Buckley's side as they won promotion to the Premier Division. He also picked up an FAI Cup winners medal as Fingal defeated Sligo Rovers 2-1 in the final.

The year ended on a controversial note as discrepancies in player contracts at his permanent club, Derry City, led to the uncovering of financial irregularities at The Brandywell. Derry were subsequently expelled from the league and in 2010 Darren signed a permanent deal at Sporting Fingal. He made a further 19 league appearances as Fingal made their bow in the Premier Division, but in February 2011 financial difficulties overtook Sporting Fingal and the club folded.

Darren signed for Bray Wanderers on 25 March, shortly after the 2011 season had begun and made 13 league appearances for the Seagulls in 2011 as Bray performed well in the Premier Division under Pat Devlin. In January 2012 Darren signed for a second year at the County Wicklow club and he remained first choice keeper for Pat Devlin for the next two seasons, making 29 league appearances in 2012 and 31 in 2013.
