Darren, who is a native of Celbridge, played on the all-conquering Salesian College team in the late 90's. He began his league career with Monaghan United in 2000 and was the club's top scorer in 2003.

In 2005 Darren joined Kildare County and made 32 league appearances for the 'Thoroughbreds', scoring ten goals, before leaving the club in the summer of 2006 due to a persistent back injury.

However, in February 2007 he was back in league football having signed for Shelbourne where he played in 10 league games that year, scoring twice. But Darren was released by the Reds in July of that year and in 2008 he signed for Longford Town and added 13 league goals to his record in 31 league appearances.

2009 saw Darren sign for a second spell at Monaghan United but after just 2 league outings he returned to Longford in the summer transfer window where he remained until the end of the season.
