John is a striker who was born in Cobh but started his football career in the youth system at Peterborough United. He spent two years in England before returning to Ireland where he signed for Cork City in time for the start of the 2002/03 season. He went on to score 68 league goals in 138 league appearances during seven seasons at Turner's Cross. John won a league title with Cork in 2005 and an FAI Cup winner's medal in 2007.

On 1 September 2008 John made the move back to England, signing for London side Barnet FC and he spent two years, scoring a remarkable 34 times in 70 league appearances. On 23 July 2010 he moved on, signing for Exeter City where he spent four seasons, scoring 25 goals in 133 league and cup appearances. John was released by Exeter in May 2014.

Having been released by Exeter City John returned home to Cork and signed for a second stint at Cork City on July 1st 2014. His first appearance back in Cork colours came as a half-time substitute in a scoreless draw away to Sligo Rovers on 6 July. On 15 August John scored the only goal of the game against Derry City at the Brandywell but that would be his only goal in 14 league appearances as Cork finished second to Dundalk in the 2014 Premier Division table.

In 2015 John made another 14 league appearances, scoring two goals, as Cork finished runners-up to Dundalk in the league once again. In November 2015, John left Cork City and, a month later, signed for First Division side Limerick FC. Limerick strolled to the First Division title in 2016 and John contributed twelve goals from 16 league appearances, adding another seven goals to his career tally in Cup competitions. Limerick then announced at the end of the 2017 season that John was not being offered another contract and would leave the club.
