Aidan came up through the Bohemians underage system and played in all eleven positions for their Under 21 team. He made his Premier Division debut for Bohs away to Cork City on 19 November 2004, the final day of that season.

With first team opportunities limited, largely due to persistent injuries, Collins signed for Dermot Keely at Shelbourne in February 2007. He made 17 league appearances at Tolka Park and scored one league goal, a 25 yard strike against Limerick 37 on 1st September.

In 2008 Aidan moved on to Sporting Fingal, making 22 league appearances in their debut season in the League of Ireland. He took a year out of football in 2009 before signing for Mick Cooke at Monaghan United in 2010. He made 22 league appearances that year and scored three league goals.

Roddy Collins took over at Monaghan in 2011 and Aidan played in 26 league games, scoring once, as the Mons won promotion to the Premier Division through the end of season play-offs. Aidan stayed with Longford in 2012 but the club withdrew from the league on 18 June 2012 and he subsequently joined Longford Town in late August 2012. He made just 4 appearances for Longford and left at the end of 2012 to sign for his old boss Roddy Collins at Athlone Town.

Aidan was given the captain's armband for Athlone and helped lead the club to the First Division title, and promotion to the Premier Division, by playing in 22 league games. He re-signed for Athlone for the 2014 season, under another old boss, Mick Cooke. Unfortunately, Aidan made only six appearances for Athlone in 2014, due an injury that ruled him out for the majority of the season, as they were relegated from the Premier Division. Aidan stayed with Athlone for the 2015 season in a role as player/coach and went on to make 19 First Division appearances during the season.

In January 2016, Aidan returned to First Division side Shelbourne where he scored twice in 18 league appearances as the Reds finished sixth of eight in the First Division table.
