Jason’s Biography
Jason Byrne began his playing career at Bray Wanderers in 1998. He scored 49 league goals in 128 league appearances in his 5 seasons at the club, establishing himself as a real threat to opposition defences.
Byrne then signed for Shelbourne on January 12th 2003 for an estimated fee of €75,000. He became an instant success at Shels and was named PFAI player of the year in his first season as the Reds lifted the 2003 League title.
2004 saw Byrne continue where he left off scoring 25 times in 33 league games, again helping Shelbourne to the league title. He was also a key figure in Shels' Champions League run and earned himself a call up to the Ireland squad for a friendly against Poland.
Having won a third league title in 2006, Jason left Shelbourne on 17 January 2007 in a £75,000 deal that took him to Cardiff City. He then scored on his debut against Wolves in the English Championship, but at the start of the 2007/08 season his first-team chances were limited and he returned to play in the league of Ireland in 2008 with Bohemians.
After being linked with the mover for quite a while, Byrne rejoined Bohemians at the start of the 2008 season, scoring his first goal against Finn Harps in March 2008. He also scored both goals against Drogheda United in the game that clinched the 2008 title for Bohemians.
In January of 2011 Jason left a Bohemians side that was in the process of dealing with serious financial difficulties and signed for Ian Foster at Dundalk, where he scored six times in the league over 24 appearances.
In 2012 Jason returned to the Carlisle Grounds, signing for Pat Devlin's Bray Wanderers fourteen years after he had first lined out for the Wicklow club. In two seasons by the seaside he netted 26 league goals in 58 appearances, adding three more goals in cup competitions.
In January 2014 Jason signed for a second spell at Bohemians. He managed nine goals in his twenty-nine appearances for the 2014 Premier Division season, as Bohs finished seventh in the league table. Jason re-signed with the club for the 2015 season under Keith Long and went on to make twenty league appearances for the club, scoring his only goal of the season in a 2-1 win over Limerick, as Bohs finished fifth in the Premier Division. He left the club at the end of the season.
In January 2016, Jason signed for First Division side UCD. His first appearance for the Students cam in a scoreless draw with Cabinteely at Stradbrook on 30 April 2016 and his first goal arrived in a 5-1 win over Athlone in July. He finished the season with four league goals from 17 league appearances and in January 2017 it was announced that Jason had left Belfield and had signed for his former manager Pat Devlin at Cabinteely.
Jason signed for Bluebell United in December 2017.
