Sean was involved in UCD's U20 campaign in 2009 and began to make progress in the first team towards the end of 2010, making his league debut away to Bray Wanderers on 24 September 2010. Sean made just 2 league appearances in 2010 but added 7 more in 2011, also scoring his first competitive goal for the Students with a late winner against Drogheda United at Belfield on 2 May 2011.

In January 2014, Sean signed for Longford Town. He made his debut for the midlanders in a 1-0 hme defeat to Shelbourne on 15 March 2014 and made 9 league appearances before departing to join Shelbourne in July 2014. He made his league bow for the Reds against Finn Harps at Tolka Park on 25 July and he scored twice in 7 league appearances as Shels narrowly missed out on promotion.

In December 2014 Sean signed for his father, Martin, at Premier Division side Limerick FC ahead of their 2015 campaign. He went on to make 30 league appearances, scoring three times, as Limerick secured a relegation play-off spot on the last day of the season. Sean played in both play-off matches as Limerick were relegated to the First Division after being beaten over two legs by Finn Harps. Sean left Limerick at the end of the season but returned to sign a new contract in April of 2016. Limerick cruised to the First Division title that year with Sean scoring twice in 17 league appearances.

In January 2017 Sean quit the League of Ireland to sign a contract at American side Louisville City. Sean then returned to sign with Drogheda United in July 2017.
