David joined UCD from Belvedere in the summer of 2009 and made his senior debut for the club in an EA Cup game against Athlone town on 13 April. David gained some first team experience in Cup games that season but made just one league start in 2010, in a 4-1 defeat away to Shamrock Rovers on 23 August. The following year he became a first-choice centre back for the Students and scored his first league goal for the club against St Patrick's Athletic on 30 May 2011. He remained at the heart of the UCD defence for three seasons and in that time he scored six league goals in 85 league appearances. At the end of 2013 David left the club and signed for Trevor Croly at Shamrock Rovers.

David started the first league game of the 2014 season for Shamrock Rovers before an injury ruled him out for a while. He recovered to finish the season with six appearances for the Premier Division side and two for the Rovers B team. David stayed with Shamrock Rovers for the 2015 season and he went on to make sixteen league appearances as Shamrock Rovers finished third in the Premier Division.

In December 2016, Brendan moved to Limerick.
