Andy came up through the ranks at Crumlin United and began his LoI career with UCD in 2008. He was a key member of the Students' A-Championship side of that year and on the opening day of the 2009 season Andy made his league debut against Limerick FC. He made 30 league appearances that year and won a First Division title winner's medal as the Students returned to the Premier Division. He continued at the heart of UCD's defence through 2010, making 25 league appearances and in January of 2011 Andy moved across town to join up with Alan Mathew's Shelbourne.

Andy made 29 league appearances in 2011 as Shelbourne won promotion from the First Division. He also played in the club's 2011 FAI Cup final defeat to Sligo Rovers following a penalty shootout at the Aviva Stadium. In 2012 Andy was again a regular at the heart of Shels' defence, making 22 league appearances, but in December he left the club to sign for Stephen Kenny at Dundalk.

Andy made his debut for Dundalk against Shamrock Rovers on the opening night of the 2013 season and missed just one league game as the club finished second in the Premier Division, three points behind champions St Patrick's Athletic.

Andy's second season at Oriel Park saw him make 32 league appearances as Dundalk beat Cork City to the 2014 league title on the last day of the season and he picked up two more League medals in 2015 and 2016, missing just one of the Lilywhites' 66 league games in this period. Andy also played in both of Dundalk's FAI Cup finals at this time, receiving a winners medal in 2015 when Dundalk beat Cork City in the final, and making do with a runners up medal in 2016 when they lost to the same team. 2016 also saw Dundalk qualify for the group stages of the Europa League and Andy played every minute of the club's twelve European games that year.

At the end of Dundalk's Euro adventure of 2016 Andy signed for English Championship side Preston North End.

In January 2018, Andy went on loan to Doncaster for the rest of the season.
