Shane played underage football with Cherry Orchard before making the move to England in 2002 when he signed with Notts County. He made his debut on 28 August 2003 against Swindon Town and went on to make 45 league appearances over the following three seasons.

Shane left Notts County in 2006, spending a brief period at Virginia Beach Mariners in the USA but they went out of business and Shane returned to Ireland in 2007 to sign for UCD under Pete Mahon. He made 27 appearances for the Students that year and earned a place in the Irish U21 side, making his debut in a friendly against Germany in August 2007.

In January 2008 Shane signed for English side Brighton & Hove Albion on a six month deal. He made only one league appearance for the 'Seagulls' before returning to UCD in the summer transfer window. By the end of the 2008 season Shane had made a further 15 league appearances for the Belfield club.

In December 2011 Shane took an opportunity to play abroad, signing for Finnish side FC Haka. He spent one year in Finland before returning to St Pats, signing for Liam Buckley on 20 November 2012. Despite scoring the winner against Drogheda on the opening night of the 2013 season Shane made just 11 league starts (adding 5 more league appearances from the bench) as Pats won the league title. Shane left the club at the end of the 2013 season.
