Alan’s Biography

Alan is a Sligo native who began his football career in England with spells at Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday, before stepping on to the League of Ireland ladder for the first time when he signed for UCD in 2002.

Following the Students’ relegation to the First Division at the end of 2003, Cawley moved to reigning champions Shelbourne at the beginning of the 2004 season, where he went on to win a league medal with Shels as they retained their crown. He also tasted his first piece of European football at Shelbourne.

In 2005, with first-team opportunities limited, Cawley went on loan to Longford Town, before he made a permanent move away from Tolka Park in early 2006 when he returned to UCD.

Midway through the campaign, he was again on the move when he switched to Waterford United, but it was another short spell as he began the 2007 season at Bray Wanderers under Eddie Gormley. Cawley remained at the Carlisle Grounds for two seasons, netting eight times in 34 outings, and some impressive performances saw him snapped up by St. Pat’s boss Jeff Kenna at the start of 2009.

During his one season at St Pats his two goals in 35 appearances helped the Saints to seventh. Cawley, who has represented the Republic of Ireland at all levels up to U18, then became Ian Foster’s first signing for Dundalk when he put pen to paper on Christmas Eve 2009. He made his league debut for the Lilywhites when entering as a second-half substitute in the opening-day of the 2010 season against Bray Wanderers on 5 March.

After an injury plagued season Alan moved north of the border in February 2011 signing for Irish League side Portadown.
