Barry played underage football at Carrick Rovers in Monaghan, where he grew up, Stella Maris and Dundalk. He then began his professional career at Queens Park Rangers in 1996 before playing at a host of clubs in a career that took him from London, to Manchester, to Belgium and back.

His longest stays were at York City, Darlington, Barnsley and Bradford City and in September 2012, at he age of 33, Barry signed for Darius Kierans at Dundalk for the remainder of the 2012 season. He made his league debut in a 2-1 defeat to UCD at Oriel Park on 7 September and made 6 league appearances before being released at the end of the season.
