London-born Farrelly started his football career at Kingscourt Harps in 2000 and went on to spend over ten years there. In 2010/11, he played with Monaghan United in summer leagues, before spending a short time at Saint Francis.

The young stopper was selected for the FAI Emerging Talent squad and spent three years with them between 2008 and 2010. He also represented his school, Inver College, by being selected for the ‘Ulster Schools’ and ‘Club Inter-provincial’ teams. From that, he got selected for a series of international school trials.

Farrelly had been on standby for the Republic of Ireland three times, the last being in August 2011 for the U18 squad against Wales. He had also been called up to the Irish U17 international squad in December 2010.

In November 2011, he went on trial at Scottish club Livingston before joining Dundalk in January 2012, midway through their U19 season. He played for Dundalk's U19 side and also provided goalkeeping cover from the bench for the senior side on seven occasions in the latter part of the 2012 season.
