Born in Cork, Shane played schoolboys football with local side Rockmount before joining the Liverpool youth academy as a sixteen year old in 2006. He spent three years at Anfield and in July 2009 he was snapped up by then Ipswich Town manager, and former Rockmount boy, Roy Keane.

Shane made his league debut for Ipswich on 20 February 2010 in a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough and went on to make 17 league appearances in two and a half years at Portman Road. In November 2011 he went on a two month loan at Port Vale but didn't make a senior appearance, and on 20 January 2012 his contract at Ipswich was terminated by mutual consent.

On 2nd February 2012 Shane signed for his hometown club Cork City, where he made 4 league appearances in the opening half of the 2012 season. But on the final day of July he moved north, signing for Stephen Kenny at Shamrock Rovers. He made his Hoops debut in the Leinster Senior Cup final against St Pats CY on 3 September and made his league bow a week later against Bohemians at Tallaght Stadium. He made 3 league appearances over the final months of the season, however, Shane was not kept on for 2013 by new boss Trevor Croly.

On October 30th 2013 Shane signed for Irish League club Portadown. He spent one season at Shamrock Park but returned to the League of Ireland on 31 July 2014, the last day of the summer transfer window, when he joined Limerick FC under new boss Martin Russell. He became a key player in the latter stages of the season, playing in 11 of the thirteen Premier Division games left, as Limerick finished sixth in the table.

In January 2015 Cobh Ramblers announced that they had signed Shane ahead of their upcoming First Division campaign. Shane became a mainstay of the Cobh side, making 24 league appearances for the Ramblers as they finished sixth in the 2015 First Division table. Then, in 2016 Shane was the lynchpin of the Ramblers midfield as they reached the promotion play-offs, losing out over two legs to Drogheda United in the semi-finals. Shane made another 24 league appearances for the Rams in 2016, this time scoring eight goals, but he left the club at the end of the season and in January 2017 he signed for Pat Fenlon at Waterford FC.
