Marc played with Lisburn Youth and Manchester United in his youth before joining Portsmouth in 2004. He went on a series of loans, joining Yeovil Town midway through the 2005/06, making his debut for the club in March 2006 in League One. He made two appearances for the club before the end of the season. Over the course of the 2006/07 and 2007/08 season, Marc had two spells at Bournemouth, amassing twenty-seven appearances in all competitions for the then League One side. He also had a spell at Luton Town in the latter season too.

Marc then made his debut for Portsmouth, making his debut for the club in the League Cup in September 2008. He went on two spend three seasons at the club, two in the Premier League and the last in the Championship, making nearly fifty appearances for the Pompey.

In August 2010, Marc joined Stoke City in a deal that saw Liam Lawerence and Dave Kitson move the other way. He's made over one hundred and seventy-five appearances for Stoke since.
