Michael is a former Irish universities International and he toured China with the Irish University side in 2001. He started his league career at Cork City but was restricted to 15 first team appearances and he joined Cobh Ramblers on loan from at the end of August 2004.

Michael then parted company with the St. Coleman's Park outfit, but re-signed in the July 2007 transfer window and played with them until they were forced out of the league at the end of the 2008 season. After Cobh's demise Michael turned out for UCC in the Munster Senior League before joining up with Avondale United. He was a member of the Avondale team that reached the third round of the 2010 FAI Cup where the Cork side lost out to fellow non-league side Belgrove. Michael also played for the club in 2010/11 and during their Munster Senior League winning season of 2011/12.
