Karl started out at Dublin schoolboys club, Belvedere, before joining the Manchester City academy in 2001. He spent five years at the club but did not play competitively. After loan spells at Lincoln City and Burnley he returned to Ireland in 2006, signing for Newry City in the Irish League.

After six months at Newry, Karl joined Derry City on 2 February 2007. He spent just five months with the Candystripes and, in July '07, he moved to Waterford United. He scored on his debut for the Blues, in a 2-1 defeat to Sligo Rovers, and made 42 league appearances, scoring eight goals, in his eighteen months at the club.

In 2009 Karl signed for Mick Cooke at Monaghan United. In 2010 Karl not only won Club's Player of the Year award but he also became Monaghan's all time joint top goal scorer for a single season, alongside LOI legend Andy Myler, when he netted 17 goals. Karl was released by Monaghan at the end of the 2010 season and signed for Alan Mathews at Shelbourne at the start of 2011.

Karl only started 6 league games, adding 9 more appearances from the bench, as Shelbourne won promotion from the First Division. He scored only once, in a 1-1 home draw against Cork City in May. He was also a substitute in the FAI Cup final against Sligo Rovers. He was brought on in the 119th minute to take a penalty, which he scored, in the shootout that the Reds lost 4-1.

In December 2011 Karl signed for Tony Cousins at Longford Town, scoring four times in 25 league appearances during the 2012 season. Having helped the midlanders to the promotion play-offs that year he was not part of Longford 's 2013 squad.
