Henderson delighted with 'everything'

Waterford United manager Stephen Henderson described himself as “delighted” following his side’s 1-0 victory over Derry City in the RSC on Friday night. Liam Kearney grabbed his first goal for the Blues twelve minutes into the game.

“Overall we’re delighted with them”, Henderson said. “What we have to do now is enjoy it, then park it. We have two away trips coming up so the same kind of attitude is required for next week.”

“Everything” was Stephen Henderson’s answer to what pleased him most about the victory. “That’s the truth”, he said. “We said before the match if we take the conditions, the pitch is very heavy, lashing rain and a very strong wind, we want to go out and play football, but sometimes you have to dig in.”

“First half I thought we knocked the ball around, we used the breeze as best we could. Second half we had to dig in and to a man they ran themselves into the ground.”

Henderson believes that the winning mentality he is trying to instil in his players can play a key role.

"People think I’m a bit strange because I expect us to win every match that we play in and if we can rub that off on the players, the great. Nine out of nine is a good return, a good return for the work the lads put in and good return for the work we did in pre season. We’re a good side and deserved to win tonight."

After seeing his team put in a hard shift tonight, Henderson knows that the same is required for the remainder of the season, and with two tricky trips to face Salthill Devon and Mervue United next up, he hopes to continue the winning sequence.

“We’ll prepare the same way we have been, training three or four times a week”, Henderson said. “What we’re trying to do is get the ball down on the ground. It’s the way Waterford have played for years and on top of that you have to have a work rate.”

“The work rate we had tonight was tremendous, next week we’re going to be the same in terms of work rate and we’ll knock the ball around well because we believe the pitch is lovely so that’ll suit us”, he concluded.
