Shamrock Rovers have confirmed that they are set to take on LA Galaxy in Tallaght Stadium on February 21st.
The news came as a bit of a surprise to League Of Ireland fans when Robbie Keane announced the fixture live on RTE during the Late Late Show last Friday night. Irish captain, Keane admitted he was looking forward to coming back and playing in his hometown stadium.
"I'm very excited for the Rovers fans but also the Ireland fans," said Keane during an interview with SRFC TV following the announcement this morning.
The game will no doubt attract a sell-out crowd at the 6,000 capacity ground, with Rovers Chairman Jonathan Roche delighted to have secure such a mega friendly for Pat Fenlon’s side in preseason.
"Shamrock Rovers are delighted to be playing host to LA Galaxy at Tallaght. We very much look forward to welcoming everyone from the club here, and particularly to welcoming Robbie Keane home. We know Robbie spends a lot of time in the area when he's home from the US, so I'm sure it will be great for him to finally play in Tallaght Stadium.”
The last time Tallaght Stadium hosted a real glamour friendly was back in 2009 when Cristano Ronaldo made his debut for Real Madrid in the South Dublin Stadium, there is expected to be just as much hype this time round when the former Spurs player and current Irish record goal scorer, Keane, graces the playing surface.
"We have had quite a few great players grace the Tallaght Stadium pitch against us, including Ronaldo and Del Piero, but to have our own local footballing hero play here will be even more special. It should be a great occasion," commented Roche.
The game is set to take place on Saturday February 21st at 4pm with Shamrock Rovers club members and season ticket holders due to be given priority tickets for the event when tickets are released early in the New Year.
