Bohemians 3 - 1 UCD

Fri, Sep 10 2010
Mark Quigley scored late as Bohs destroyed UCD at Dalymount Park on Friday night. Jason Byrne had given the hosts a well deserved opener before man of the match Gareth McGlynn blasted in their second just before the break. Paul Corry looked to give UCD hope, but the Gypsies made sure when Quigley fired in late on.

Bohs almost scored as early as the first minute. McGlynn fed the ball into Killian Brennan’s path as he charged through the UCD defence. But, unfortunately for the Gypsies, Brennan lost his balance and fell over just yards from goal.

Only five minutes later and again Bohs should have scored. Brennan’s cross-field ball was volleyed to McGlynn by Raffaele Cretaro. McGlynn’s effort was scuffed but it found Byrne who turned and blasted just over from in front of goal.

UCD enjoyed a rare chance when Karl Moore’s fine cross was headed goalwards by Brian Shortall, but Chris O’Connor tipped it just over. Then at the other end Bohs had a huge shout for a penalty when Evan McMillan climbed all over Jason McGuinness. Nothing was awarded though and Bohs had to seek an opener elsewhere.

A couple of minutes later and McGuinness thought he had given Bohs just that, but his effort was ruled out for offside after Cretaro’s fine shot was deflected into his path.

But then, finally, Bohs struck. McGlynn, running the show in midfield was the provider. A swift counter-attack, indebted to Brennan’s cute flick on the halfway line, set McGlynn away and he found Byrne with a perfectly weighted through-ball. Byrne still had some work to do however, powering through and smashing the ball beyond Billy Brennan.

It was two nil shortly afterwards as Bohs exerted total dominance on the game. UCD were caught dallying in their half, not for the first time. Owen Heary and Mark Quigley repeatedly tried to get a sight at goal in the box before McGlynn finally put his foot through it to send Bohs in two up at the break.

UCD started the second half well, winning a lot of corners, but Bohs almost scored a third before the hour mark. Counter-attacking with ease, Cretaro found Brennan free on the right hand side of the area. Brennan crossed to the back post where Byrne rose highest – but his header was tipped onto the post.

Yet more counter-attacking and Bohs were running the show. Cretaro and Byrne conspired to make a meal of another simple counter attack when two against one, before Quigley crossed for Owen Heary’s diving header – which was well saved.

UCD, somehow, found themselves just one behind with twenty minutes to go when Paul Corry fired in from the edge of the area. One of their many corners – of which there were double-figures in the second half – was played short from Keith Moore to Chris Mulhall. He rolled in the onrushing Corry to fire it in.

Bohs began to look dodgy as UCD pumped balls into the area but Quigley made the game safe with a fine finish with five minutes remaining. The recently introduced Paddy Madden won the ball in a dangerous area on the left and gave it to Quigley who dribbled into the box and fired a shot into the far corner.

With Rovers winning it wasn’t a great night for Bohs, but they did all they could do with a convincing display at Dalymount Park.
