Limerick -v- Longford Town

by Extratime Team
Fri, Sep 03 2010
Fourth placed Limerick welcome Longford Town to Jackman Park this Friday evening as they continue their pursuit of promotion to the Premier Division. Kick Off 7.45pm.

Limerick come into the game without a win in their last three games. Two weeks ago league leaders Derry City left Jackman Park with all three points with a 1-0 win. A 2-2 draw with Sporting Fingal last Friday meant a replay on Monday night. Despite a battling performance, cup holders Fingal advanced after a penalty shootout.

Limerick Lie just one point behind Waterford United in third and two points behind second place Monaghan United. Limerick’s home form has seen them win seven of their 12 home league games.

Thomas Heary and Dave Rogers come back into the side having missed last week’s game having featured in the Cup for other sides this season. Lee O’Mara is suspended for the game following his recent red card. Shane Tracy returns from suspension.

Longford Town come into the game after a superb showing against Premier Division leaders Shamrock Rovers in the FAI Cup last weekend. Despite losing 2-1, manager Tony Cousins was full of praise for his side.

They gave me absolutely everything,” he told Extratime. “I like the team to play football and to play the way we did against the Premier Division league leaders was great. I’m so proud of the lads. I’m so proud of them. We could’ve won the game with the chances we had. I couldn’t have asked for anything more from the players.”

Cousins is hoping that his side can use the game as a stepping stone to finish as high as possible in the First Division table. “They showed brilliant character. As I said to them after it, this has to be a stepping stone for us to keep going until the end of the season. My aim is that we can finish around mid- table. Hopefully we can keep the guts of the squad and build on top of that. We then can go forward.”

Limerick won 2-0 in Jackman Park but Longford collected the points in a 1-0 win in Flancare Park.

Extratime Prediction: Limerick to just shade it, 2-1.
