UCD -v- Bohemians

by Extratime Team
Tue, Mar 16 2010
Tuesday night will see last year’s First Division and Premier Division champions clash as UCD welcome Bohemians to the Belfield Bowl (kick off 7.45pm). UCD began their return to the top flight with a solid 3-0 away win over Drogheda United last week. Students manager Martin Russell will be looking to carry that form into the game against Bohs and in particular two goal hero Ciaran Kilduff.

“It’s early days but Ciaran has made a good start,” admits UCD boss Martin Russell, “But so have all our lads. We have a squad of young players with tremendous potential. Now they have the platform to reach greater heights and there can be no more comprehensive test than to pit themselves against Bohs.”

Sean Harding is unavailable for UCD through suspension carried over from last season but skipper Evan McMillan is approaching full fitness after long term injury and could make the squad.

Bohemians manager Pat Fenlon is expecting a tough encounter with the Students.

“UCD are a very decent team with a very good young manager. It’s always tough out there in the UCD Bowl and we’re expecting a very tough encounter,” Fenlon said.

Bohs opened their league defence with a 1-0 win over Sporting Fingal thanks to a Killian Brennan penalty. That win was followed by a 1-1 draw against Glentoran in the Setanta Cup to set up a semi-final match against Linfield.

Pat Fenlon was pleased with the 1-1 draw on Saturday. “We’re happy with the game and we took a lot of positives out of it”, Fenlon said. “We can get better and we’re hoping to gel together as a team quicker.”

The Setanta Cup tie allowed Fenlon to use the full limits of his squad and give a debut to Chris O’Connor, whose Man of the Match performance will leave the manager with a difficult selection in goal.

Jason McGuinness misses out on the UCD game with a hamstring injury picked up against Glentoran and may be out for a few weeks.
