Derry City -v- Cork City FORAS Co-op

by Alan Smith
Fri, Mar 05 2010
It’s a new dawn for both Derry City and Cork City FORAS Co-Op at the Brandywell tonight (Kick-off 7.5pm), with two of the best supported sides in the country playing in the unfamiliar surroundings of the First Division.

Much has been said about the situations surrounding the demise of these clubs, and as they line out tonight, much will have changed since the five years when the two sides played in front of 10,000 to decide the outcome of the Premier Division at Turner’s Cross.

It was Cork who prevailed on that famous night, though a result here for the Leesiders tonight would come as quite a shock.

Tommy Dunne has a party of just 13 players – mostly youngsters, with a few experienced heads thrown in – and the hastily assembled squad will struggle against a Candystripes side which have managed to hold onto some of the Premier Division stars from last season.

Stephen Kenny may have lost some of his star performers – most notably their influential leader for so many seasons Peter Hutton – but his squad will still have some quality including striker Mark Farren, Kevin Deery and Barry Molloy.

The home team should win comfortably here, mainly due to the lack of preparation from a Cork point of view.
