Finn Harps vs St Patricks Athletic

St Patrick’s Athletic need to avoid defeat in Ballybofey on Friday night, three days after a superb performance in the UEFA Cup against Hertha Berlin, if they are to halt Bohemians from being crowned eircom League Champions 2008.

Finn Harps have lifted themselves seven points clear of the relegation zone and after last week’s 1-0 win over Bray Wanderers, Paul Hegarty’s team will be full of confidence going into this clash. Despite that, Hegarty is fully aware that Pat’s will fully focused back on league matters.

“They may well be disappointed with the result (against Hertha Berlin on Tuesday) but it won't change the game on Friday. If anything, it will stand to them. I remember from my time with Derry City, when we came back from European activity, the higher tempo was still there.”

Jonathan Minnock returns to the panel after missing last week's victory over Bray Wanderers through suspension. Conor Gethins is also pushing for a start again after returning to the team as a late substitute last week. Central defender Stuart Malcolm (groin) and midfielder Davy Byrne (thigh) are still doubtful having missed the last three games.

St Patrick’s Athletic will be looking for a strong finish to the season to ensure European qualification once again. Manager John McDonnell knows it won’t be easy.

“After the game the other night it’s back to the basics of the league.

“Switching back to the league after European games is something the lads have become used to this season and we fully expect a tough test up there from Finn Harps.”

St Pats have recorded comprehensive victories in both previous games between the sides this season, winning 3-0 in April in Donegal and 5-1 in July in Dublin. The latter game saw Glen Fitzpatrick bag his first goal for the Saints and the big striker is likely to start again as injuries to Gary O’Neill (groin) and John Murphy (back) look to have ruled them out.

Dessie Byrne (hamstring), Bobby Ryan (knee) missed the UEFA Cup game with Hertha Berlin and remain out while Welsh defender David Partridge is a week away from full fitness after a shoulder injury. <`/p>

The game kicks off at the earlier than usual time of 7.35pm and RTE cameras will be there to show goal inserts during the live broadcast of Bohemians v Bray Wanderers.
