Former Candystripe Grant Gillespie joins Ayr United on a short-term deal

Scottish midfielder Grant Gillespie has returned back to his native country to join Scottish Championship side Ayr United on a short term contract.

Gillespie had previously played with Hamilton, Dundee United and Raith Rovers before moving to Derry last season.

He made 8 appearances for the Candystripes in his season long stint in Ireland where he scored once in a 4-0 victory over Finn Harps last October.

“Grant has been training with us for the last 3 weeks and getting up to speed with his fitness.

“He has been fully fit for the last week and a half and we have been really impressed with him”; stated manager Mark Kerr as he spoke to the media following the announcement.

“I knew Grant anyway from playing against him many times and I know his background. The length of time he has trained with us showed us his commitment which made it an easy decision to get him on board.

“He can play in a number of positions but has played the majority of his career in the centre of midfield and at right back.

“Grant has exactly the type of character that we want at the club and we are delighted to get him signed up.”
