Mitchell Beeney leaves Sligo Rovers

Former Chelsea youth goalkeeper Mitchell Beeney has left Premier Division Sligo Rovers by mutual consent.

The 23-year-old ‘keeper departs the Showgrounds having made 13 appearances so far this term for the Bit O’Red.

After loan spells with Newport County and Crawley Town in England from his parent club Chelsea, Beeney made the loan switch to Sligo last year before signing a permanent deal during the 2018 summer transfer window.

The English native made his Sligo debut against Derry City in a 2-1 win over the then Kenny Shiels managed Candystripes.

Coincidentally, his debut saw the Bit O’Red claim their first three points of the 2018 campaign.

2019 has seen Beeney compete with Ed McGinty for first choice in the Sligo goal with the younger McGinty making six league appearances for Liam Buckley’s side.

Beeney’s most recent appearance for Sligo came in the 3-3 draw away to Waterford FC at the RSC in May.

His departure leaves only McGinty and Luke McNicholas, who has also just signed a new deal with the club, as the only registered ‘keepers in Liam Buckley’s senior set-up.

Next up for the Bit O’Red is a home tie against St Patrick’s Athletic on Saturday evening at the Showgrounds.
