Former Lilywhite Richie Towell leaves Premier League Brighton & Hove Albion for Salford City

Former Dundalk midfielder Richie Towell has joined recently promoted EFL League Two side Salford City following his release from Premier League Brighton & Hove Albion.

27-year-old Towell joins Salford City who are owned by the famed ‘Class of 92’. The ‘Ammies’ have catapulted themselves into the Football League after years in the non-league doldrums with promotion to League Two at the expense of AFC Fylde in May.

David Beckham has become a recent shareholder of the club who are also backed by Gary and Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and billionaire Peter Lim.

Towell joins his new employers having spent the previous two years on loan at Rotherham United with a promotion and relegation campaign in each of the two seasons.

While at Dundalk, Towell was part of a back-to-back winning Lilywhite side before also playing a pivotal role in the club’s first FAI Cup final win since 2002.

Speaking to Salford City’s media team, Towell is aiming high with his new employers - who also have former Republic of Ireland International Adam Rooney at the club.

“I’m really excited to join Salford City, I know it’s a club with a lot of ambition,” he said.

“Ever since I first watched the documentary last year, you can see that the club is going in the right direction, it has the right people on board and I’m really excited to be a part of something special.

“I want to add to what the team has already been doing, they have been doing really well over the last few seasons so hopefully I can just add to that.

“Being a central midfielder, it would be nice to get some goals and assists and to excite the fans as well!

“I think with the ambitions that the club has, to get promoted is definitely one of them. Obviously, we’ve just been promoted last year so it’s a big task, but I’m sure with the people involved with the club it’s something that we’re well capable of and that we’re all really excited for as well!”

Salford boss Graham Alexander added: “We’re delighted to get Richie on board, I think he’s a great addition to our club.

“He’s got lots of experience at Championship level, he’s still a young player with good ambitions, he plays with loads of energy, good aggression, and we can’t wait to work with him.”
