Former Cork City and Waterford playmaker Gavan Holohan signs extended deal with Hartlepool United

Former Cork City and Waterford midfielder Gavan Holohan has committed his future to English National League side Hartlepool United.

The playmaker made the move to the north-east club in February after finishing up with the Blues at the end of last season, and signed a short-term contract until May.

Holohan’s time at the Pools had been frustrated by a wait for international clearance to pass but he managed to make seven appearances, scoring once in a draw with Aldershot Town.

The 27-year-old impressed manager Craig Hignett enough to warrant the offering of a longer-term contract, the length of which has not been specified publically.

Kilkenny native Holohan spent four years with Hull City as a trainee before returning to Ireland in 2012 and signing for Drogheda United.

He played 31 of Drogheda’s league games in 2013, scoring six times, which prompted Cork City to make their move ahead of the 2014 season.

Holohan spent two seasons with the Rebel Army, and was part of the side that lifted the FAI Cup in 2016, but he opted to move onto Galway United at the end of the season.

Following Galway’s relegation in 2017, Holohan joined Waterford for the 2018 season and helped the Blues to a fourth-placed finish in their first season back at the top level.
