WNL Report: DLR Waves 0 - 7 Peamount United

Dave Donnelly reports from Jackson Park

Peamount United stretched their lead at the top of the Women’s National League with a clinical 7-0 demolition of DLR Waves at Jackson Park on Saturday evening.

Republic of Ireland international Amber Barrett led the way with a hat-trick, while two from Aine O’Gorman and one each from Eleanor Ryan-Doyle and Deirbhaile Beirne saw the Peas to victory.

Rare summer sunshine beamed down on the Kilternan venue as day ebbed towards night and conditions were perfect for a game of football played on the ground.

Both teams worked eagerly to get their passing game going early doors but it was the home side who got on track quicker, though they couldn’t fashion it into a goal opportunity.

The industrious Barrett showed flashes of what she has to offer with an early shot over the top before she had Erica Turner at full stretch to palm away a daisy-cutter from distance.

Waves were managing to make Peamount uncomfortable with a  co-ordinated pressing game and forcing them into going long.

Ironically, it was from one such instance that the away side took the lead through one of several former Waves in the Peamount squad in captain O’Gorman.

A hurried clearance from Naoisha McAloon, under pressure from Leanne Payne, was flicked into O’Gorman’s path and she cut inside Roisin McGovern before picking out the bottom corner.

Turner was again called into action to tip over a powerful shot from Louise Masterson, but it looked as the hosts would survive without further punishment until the break.

The route one approach proved fruitful for the Peas again, however, as Niamh Farrelly’s angled ball from her own half sent Barrett racing clear and she made her finish look deceptively easy.

There was nothing deceptive about her second – and Peamount’s third – two minutes later as the Donegal native curled a beautiful shot from the edge of the box that left Turner helpless.

Anything Barrett could do, Ryan-Doyle was determined to do better, and nine minutes into the second half she did just that with a brilliant run and rocket into the top corner.

Peamount got a fifth in farcical circumstances as O’Gorman was deemed to have been fouled on the edge of the box.

The official on the line held his flag out for offside against Beirne  – who appeared to be several yards off when she received the ball – but he was overruled by the referee.

Barrett curled the subsequent free kick low into the corner, and was immediately replaced by Megan Smyth-Lynch for the final quarter.

Smyth-Lynch laid on number six for O’Gorman with a beautiful ball over the top five minutes from time, before another former Wave in Beirne slammed home a seventh in injury time.
