Watch: Patrick Hoban breaks goalscoring record as Dundalk lead league leaders Shamrock Rovers

Patrick Hoban has broken Joey Donnelly’s 80-year-old record to become Dundalk’s top league goalscorer of all time.

The striker notched his 70th league goal to put the champions 1-0 up at home to league leaders Shamrock Rovers.

Hoban outmuscled Roberto Lopes to meet Michael Duffy’s corner with a diving header and Hoops keeper Alan Mannus was left with no chance.

Hoban had drawn equal with the record from the spot in Monday’s 3-1 win over UCD in Belfield – his fifth goal from six from 12 yards.

It was pure willpower that allowed the Galwayman to get to Duffy’s centre first and plant the ball in the corner to send the home crowd wild.

A win over Rovers would see the Champions move within four points of their rivals at the top of the table with a game to spare.
