First Division Round-up: Cabinteely claim historic pole position as Longford held in Cobh

Cabinteely remain in pole position in the First Division after Longford Town were held to a scoreless draw by Cobh Ramblers on Saturday night.

Neale Fenn’s side are the only unbeaten side across the leagues this season but they surrendered first place after failing to match Cabo’s result against Wexford the night before.

The midlands club were left frustrated at St Colman’s Park as, despite enjoying large periods of possession, they failed to breach the Rams’ rearguard.

In fact, it was the home side who went closest to taking the three points as top scorer Jaze Kabia grazed the foot of the post from a free kick five minutes before the interval.

Peter Hopkins shot wide while winger Carlton Ubaezuonu, on for his debut after an injury-hit spell since signing from Dundalk at the start of the season, forced a late save from Adam Mylod.

Cabo lead the league outright heading into the next round of fixtures for the first time in their League of Ireland history following their 2-0 win over Wexford on Friday.

Pat Devlin’s side have played a game more than Longford, however, after the midlands side’s home game with Galway United was called off and rescheduled for next month.

The south Dublin side were in full control of their fixture at Ferrycarrig Park and led inside 15 minutes when top scorer Rob Manley notched his tenth goal of the season.

The former UCD and Bohemians striker hit the net on the half-volley from just inside the box after Wexford failed to clear Daniel Blackbyrne’s long throw.

Another former Student Jack Watson sealed the win just before the break as he was played in by Marty Waters, and he finished well to make it four wins from four away from home for Cabo.

Bray Wanderers are up to sixth after a Dylan McGlade hat-trick helped the Seagulls to a 3-1 defeat of Drogheda United at the Carlisle Grounds.

McGlade opened the scoring from the spot on 17 minutes after Kevin Farragher had bundled over Dean O’Halloran, and he added a second on the stroke of half time.

Luke Gallagher pulled one back early in the second half for Drogs but McGlade completed his hat-trick and sealed the win with an emphatic finish three minutes from time.

And Galway United are off the bottom of the table at the expense of Wexford thanks to a 4-0 demolition of Athlone Town in Lissywollen.

Cian Murphy, Conor Melody, Vinny Faherty and Wilson Waweru – the 17-year-old’s first for the club – earned Alan Murphy’s side their second win of the campaign.

And Shelbourne got back to winning ways at Tolka Park as first-half goals from Karl Moore and Lorcan Fitzgerald saw them ease past troubled Limerick.
