FAI Cup Round-up: Glengad earn famous victory over Home Farm while Avondale edge out Newtown in seven-goal thriller.

Updated April 21st, 11.00pm.

Substitute keeper Kevin McLaughlin was the hero for Glengad United as the Inishowen League side secured a famous scalp in Home Farm at the Crua on Sunday.

The veteran stopper was brought on deep into extra time as a penalty shootout loomed and saved twice as the junior side reached the first round of the FAI Cup proper.

Stephen Fildara had given the home side the lead ten minutes before the end of normal time but Padraic Gilsenan equalised five minutes later to force an extra half hour.

The sides remained deadlocked after 120 minutes and, after Aaron O'Dwyer and Michael Byrne both missed from 12 yards, it all came down to sudden death.

David Pepper saw his spotkick saved by McLaughlin, and it was left to Dillon Ruddy to find the net and seal a win that will live long in the collective memory on the peninsula.

On Saturday afternoon, Avondale United edged out Newtown Rangers in a seven-goal thriller at Farrell Park.

David Shovlin scored twice for the Dales, including the winner eight minutes from the end of extra time, as the FAI Intermediate Cup finalists won out under sunshine in Tallaght.

Elsewhere in Dublin, Glebe North edged out Midleton 2-1 in Market Green, while another Dublin-Cork clash saw Malahide United run out 2-0 winners over UCC at the Mardyke.

Friday night’s fixtures saw first-time entrants Collinstown overcome 2016/17 Leinster Senior League winners St Mochta’s 1-0, while Maynooth University Town saw off Rockmount 5-1.

An unexpectedly sunny day in the Dublin mountains formed the backdrop to one of the day’s most intriguing fixtures as FAI Intermediate Cup finalists Avondale travelled to face Newtown.

The visitors took the lead midway through the first half as Shovlin finished into an empty net following a lovely pull-back from Danny O’Connell.

Newtown equalised just before the break as former Shelbourne striker Lee Murtagh raced in one-on-one with Owen O’Sullivan and finished smartly with the outside of his right boot.

Avondale regained the lead on the hour as O’Connell chipped Paddy Whelan before Jamie Murphy caught David Costigan in possession before slotting home.

Costigan made amends 14 minutes from time with a well-taken header before Carl Wynne levelled things up with a well-taken finish.

However Shovlin was the hero in the second half of extra time as he glanced a header past Whelan, and the visitors held on for victory.

A brace from Sean O’Connor saw Glebe North to victory over Midleton in Balbriggan, although they had to endure a nervy finish after Midleton pulled a goal back eight minutes from time.

Goals from Mark Duggan and a last-minute clincher from Calvin Dooley did the business for Malahide as they saw off the challenge of UCC in Cork.

In the Friday night games, Ian McNeill scored the only goal of the game as fourth-tier Collinstown saw off top-flight Mochta’s at Porterstown Road.

And a hat-trick from Eoin McDermott and a brace from Darragh Reynor saw Intermediate Cup holders Maynooth past Rockmount after they’d gone behind to an early Danny Whelan strike.
