The Republic of Ireland top their Euro 2020 qualifying group after back-to-back victories over Gibraltar and Georgia.

Denmark’s remarkable fightback away to Switzerland means Mick McCarthy’s side have clear breathing space from the second-placed Swiss at this early stage in the campaign.

Conor Hourihane was the hero on Tuesday as the Aston Villa midfielder bagged his first international goal with a spectacular 25-yard free kick that left keeper Giurgi Loria with no chance.

The 28-year-old had to bide his time after a planned protest from a section of the home support against FAI CEO John Delaney in the 33rd minute held up the game as he lined up his strike.

It didn’t phase the former Sunderland, Plymouth Argyle and Barnsley man as the Cork native stroked his shot around the wall and into the corner of Loria’s net to send the home fans into raptures.

Watch the goal below from a variety of angles, and take particular note of Glenn Whelan’s clean catching and fielding of a tennis ball thrown on during the celebration.
