Yoyo Mahdy happy with first win of the season for the Students

Andrew Dempsey reports from the UCD Bowl

UCD secured their first win of their SSE Airtricity League Premier Division campaign with a richly deserved 3-0 drubbing of a lacklustre Finn Harps on Friday at the UCD Bowl.

A brace from new signing Richie O’Farrell along with the opener from College stalwart Timmy Molloy sent Collie O’Neill’s side on their way to their first Premier Division win since October 2014.

Speaking after the game with extratime.ie, UCD forward Yoyo Mahdy revealed his delight with the performance of his side.

“Harps really brought it to us and they put us under pressure, but we played our own game,” said Mahdy. “I thought we did well and we’re happy to come out with the three points.

“I think I did well myself linking the play together but obviously it’s a team game and that’s what’s most important at the end of the day.

“We know how Harps are especially from set pieces and we dealt with them quite well but as the game went on and they got more and more frustrated with their set plays, I knew that we’d get a foothold in the game and we did.”

With under-21 call ups it means the Students have a week off next week before they face a trip to Tallaght to take on table toppers Shamrock Rovers.

UCD have had some gripping encounters against the Hoops and the 21-year-old noted that he is relishing a crack at Stephen Bradley’s side.

“I’m looking forward to that one,” the 2018 First Division winner admitted.

“They’re a massive club, they’ve a good team and a big stadium.

“We’ve been playing well recently and hopefully we can keep pushing on and get a good result against them.”
