WNL Round-up: Jarrett on the double for Wexford while Peamount edge out Cork City

Rianna Jarrett scored twice as Wexford Youths got off the mark on day one of the Women’s National League with a comprehensive 3-0 win over DLR Waves at Ferrycarrig Park.

Last year’s golden boot winner Amber Barrett also got off the mark as she helped Peamount United to a 2-1 comeback win over Cork City in Greenogue on Saturday evening.

Treble-winners Wexford cantered to victory in the end to take top spot after the first day’s play but they were made to work for it as the sides went in scoreless at the break.

Ireland international Jarrett broke the deadlock on the hour mark as a mishit clearance fell fortuitously, and the striker buried a low shot into the net.

Wexford doubled their advantage within five minutes as new signing Jenny Clifford received a pass from Jarrett before sinking a low effort into the net.

And Jarrett scored her second, and Wexford’s third, from the penalty spot before Keelin McEntee was sent off late on for a bad tackle on Katrina Parrock.

In Greenogue, goals from Barrett and Ireland centurion Aine O’Gorman ensured a narrow 2-1 win after Katie McCarthy had put Cork in front within 30 seconds from the edge of the box.

Peamount took just six minutes to respond, however, as Megan Lynch played Barrett in on goal and the Donegal native scored at the second attempt after first being denied by Marie O’Sullivan.

Lynch was again the creator as Peamount completed the turnaround midway through the first half, her corner ushering in a goalmouth scramble before O’Gorman stabbed home.

Sunday sees Shelbourne open their season with a trip to play Kilkenny United in Thomastown, while Limerick host Galway in the Market's Field.
