Sam Verdon returns to Longford Town after a brief spell with Finn Harps

First Division promotion hunters Longford Town have unveiled the re-capture of attacking midfield star Sam Verdon after a short stint away from the City Calling Stadium.

Verdon initially departed Longford Town at the end of last season to join Finn Harps in December before making his return to the Midlands soon after.

The former St Patrick’s Athletic youngster made one competitive appearance for the Co. Donegal outfit in a one-nil defeat to Bohemians on the opening night of the season at Dalymount Park.

Shortly after his return to Longford Town was confirmed, the 23-year-old exclusively told extratime.ie: “I’m delighted to be back, it’s a great club and the club have been great to me in the past, so I’m delighted to be back and hoping for a successful season.

“It’s going to be tough to get into the team obviously there’s a lot of quality in the whole squad but it’s a challenge to look forward to.

“I think having a good competitive squad is important because I think it was our downfall last year towards the end of the season when we suffered injuries and suspensions.”

In terms of looking at what can be achieved on the Strokestown Road this year, Neale Fenn’s second top goalscorer last season noted that the league title is the aim for this Longford Town class of 2019.

“We have to aim as high as we can and that’s to win the league title. It’s a long season so we will just take one game at a time and see where we end up.”

The versatile attacking player concluded soon after: “I’d like to thank Ollie Horgan and everyone at Finn Harps, they have been amazing to me since the first day I went there.

“I left because of some personal issues and I’m very grateful to Ollie for being so understanding.

“I have immense respect for Ollie and everyone at the club and wish them all the best for the rest of the season.”
