Poynton swaps Richmond for Reynolds as midfielder joins Waterford

Waterford F.C have announced the signing of 21-year-old midfielder Georgie Poynton for the 2019 season.

Poynton made his senior debut with a League of Ireland club when he was named in Stephen Kenny’s senior Dundalk squad ahead of the 2014 season. He made his senior debut in an E.A. Sports Cup game as a substitute against Bray Wanderers and followed that up with his first senior start three weeks later in the E.A Sports Cup against Derry City.

It was 2015 when the versatile midfielder made his league debut for the Lilywhites coming on as a late sub against St. Patrick’s Athletic and in the following two league winning seasons of 2015 and 2016 he managed six league appearances before going out on loan in 2017 to Bohemians.

He re-joined Dundalk for the 2018 season before departing for Harry Kenny and St. Patricks Athletic in the close season ahead of the 2019 season. A week before the 2019 season was due to kick-off and before a ball was kicked the youngster left St. Pats by mutual consent and this week has joined Alan Reynolds and his Waterford team two weeks into the new Airtricity League season.

“Once I heard there might be some interest from Waterford I wanted to come and play.” Ponyton told the club website.

“I’m looking forward to coming in and meeting the lads now, I’ve played with Matthew Connor underage with Ireland and with Izzy at Bohs too.”

“I’m a midfielder firstly; I can play at right back too and across the midfield. I like to get on the ball and I think Waterford will suit me with the way they like to play. I haven’t played for Alan Reynolds before but I was close to joining the club the year they won the First Division too, so I’m happy to get sorted and join now.”
