Wexford's record goalscorer Danny Furlong returns to Ferrycarrig Park

First Division Wexford have announced the capture of their record goalscorer Danny Furlong ahead of the 2019 campaign at Ferrycarrig Park.

Furlong makes his return to Ferrycarrig Park for his third stint at the Crossabeg venue after spells in New Zealand with Southern United and with second-tier rivals Galway United.

The 29-year-old began his League of Ireland career with Wexford Youths before joining Cork City in 2012.

After joining the Rebels, Furlong soon made the move to Waterford United before making his return to Shane Keegan’s Youths.

In 2015, Furlong established as one of the most in-form strikers in the country with his 30 league goals setting the Youths on their way to a First Division title.

The Rosslare native was unable to help his side stave off relegation the following season, and he made the move to New Zealand where he played with Southern United.

Returning home in late December 2017, the prolific marksman joined Galway United who were managed by his former manager at Wexford, Shane Keegan.

While at the Tribesmen, Furlong made 15 appearances for the Dyke Road outfit with seven goals to his name, but both fitness and form cut the striker’s time short in the West.

“I’m delighted to be back at Ferrycarrig and looking forward to a big season,” Furlong told the club’s official media team.

“After speaking to Brian and Breener things are looking positive again. I know the club went through a tough few years, but we have the makings of a good squad here.

“We can kick on, not just make up the numbers and finish in the top half of the table which I think is a realistic target.”

Wexford kick-off their SSE Airtricity League First Division with an away trip to face Athlone Town on February 22nd. Kick-off at Lissywoolen is 7.45pm.
