Athlone Town continue to build for 2019 with the signing of former Shamrock Rovers striker Gareth McCaffrey

Continuing their raft of impressive off-season signings, Athlone Town have unveiled their latest acquisition, former Shamrock Rovers and Drogheda United striker Gareth McCaffrey.

22-year-old McCaffrey joins forces with the midlands club following his second spell at Drogheda, where the former Hibernian youngster helped fire the Boynesiders into the play-offs last year.

It was McCaffrey’s brace against Longford Town in September that ultimately sealed the Drogs place in the play-offs before they bowed out of the promotion hunt against Finn Harps the following month.

The former Cabinteely star won’t continue at United Park next and Athlone manager Terry Butler swooped in to seal an impressive deal for the Westmeath outfit.

McCaffrey joins John Morgan from Wexford and former Drogheda teammate Lloyd Buckley in making the move to the Ballymahon Road venue as optimism starts to grow around the oldest League of Ireland club.

Athlone Town begin their First Division campaign against Wexford, where Butler and co will no doubt be itching to secure their first league win since May 2017.
