John Morgan joins Athlone Town

Perennial strugglers Athlone Town have announced the capture of former Wexford FC utility man John Morgan ahead of the 2019 First Division campaign.

28-year-old Morgan departs the Ferrycarrig Park outfit who finished in ninth place in the First Division finish last term.

In the former Crettyard United player’s only season at the South-East outfit, Morgan featured 24 times for Wexford in the league campaign.

Morgan, like his former team-mate Dean George, has swapped the sunny South-East for the Midlands as Athlone will be looking to right the wrongs of a dreadful few years in Lissywoolen.

Morgan’s only goal for Wexford came against Athlone last term. However, the goal was soon taken away after it was found out that Wexford fielded an ineligible player in the original 1-0 win.

Athlone were awarded a 3-0 walkover in the wake of a FAI Investigation – Athlone’s only win of the season.

The player will go straight into the first-team squad who have started their pre-season preparations already with run outs against non-league sides Crumlin United and Hardwicke taking place recently.
