Former UCD and Cabinteely winger Simon Power joins Dutch side Dordrecht on loan from Norwich City

Former UCD and Cabinteely winger Simon Power has signed for Dutch second-tier side Dordrecht on loan after penning a new two-year contract with Norwich City.

The Dubliner’s initial deal, signed when he made the move from UCD at the beginning of 2018, was due to expire in the summer of 2019.

And the Canaries have moved quickly to tie the winger down to another two years at Carrow Road, where he’s firmly established in the under-23s alongside Corkman Adam Idah.

First, however, Power will spend the remainder of the Dutch season on loan with Dordrecht, who currently sit 19th in the 20-team Eerste Divisie.

Power, who came up through the ranks at Cabinteely before joining UCD in 2016, spent time training with the club before Christmas in anticipation of the move.

“I only signed an 18-month contract last year so I was under a bit of pressure to prove myself,” Power told the Canaries’ official website.

“I suppose I’m a bit relieved to have signed the new deal and I’m really looking forward to the future now.

“Playing at Norwich has been really different from playing university football. But it didn’t take me long to settle in. Regular football has helped me improve.

“I’ve really enjoyed living in Norwich. It has been something new for me, with it being the first time I’ve had away from my family. But I’ve made some good mates.

“I’m very thankful to everyone at the Club. I was told my physique needed to get better when I first started as I was quite skinny.

“But the Academy have helped me a lot and I’ve become more of an athlete now."

He won’t be the first Norwich player to gain experience in South Holland, Savvas Mourgos having made ten appearances at the beginning of this season before getting injured.
