Kevin Knight joins First Division promotion hopefuls Longford Town

Longford Town have confirmed the signature of former Cabinteely defender Kevin Knight on a one-year deal at the City Calling Stadium.

Town boss Neale Fenn has been increasing his transfer activity in recent days and news of Knight’s signing comes shortly after news of Carlton Ubaezuonu’s arrival to the Red and Black of the Midlands.

After coming fifth in last season’s instalment of the First Division, Longford Town have started to ramp up their preparations for 2019 with news of imminent transfer dealings at the club.

Knight arrives at the club having enjoyed spells at Shamrock Rovers B, Athlone Town and most recently, Cabinteely before joining forces with De Town.

News of Knight’s much sought-after signature will please many supporters at the Strokestown Road venue who were left reeling following the departures of Daniel O’Reilly and Sam Verdon to Finn Harps, while the loss of Michael Kelly has also been looked upon as a real hammer blow to Fenn’s side’s hope for promotion back to the Premier Division in 2020.

Coincidentally, Knight scored the winner against Longford Town last season in the sides most recent encounter at Stradbrook with a close-range strike in the 31st minute as Cabinteely edged out Longford by a solitary goal.

The former Irish Under-17 International missed the last game between the pair of First Division rivals through suspension following his dismissal against Drogheda United in the previous league game.
