Seamus Sharkey swaps Sligo Rovers for Glenavon

28-year-old Isle of Man native Seamus Sharkey has made the move from Premier Division side Sligo Rovers to join up with Northern Irish side Glenavon in the NIFL Premiership.

Sharkey departs the League of Ireland scene having enjoyed spells at Derry City, Limerick FC, Finn Harps and most recently, Sligo Rovers in the Premier Division, with 65 appearances to his name in total.

The Mourneview Park outfit currently lie third in the NIFL Premiership after a strong start to the season has seen them pick up 36 points in 17 games. The Lurgan Blues have played a game less than both Linfield and Ballymena United who both lie ahead of them in the league standings.

Sharkey’s arrival up north will be a major boost for Glenavon boss Gary Hamilton who has had limited defensive options since the beginning of the season following the departure of Simon Kelly and the long-term injury suffered by Andrew Doyle.

“I’m delighted to get Seamus at the Club and with his experience in the League of Ireland, he’s a good player who should bring a bit of experience and add to us in January when he’s available to play,” Hamilton revealed after the confirmation of the deal for the 28-year-old.

Having signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Glenavon, Sharkey is in line to make his debut for his new employers on January 1st against Warrenpoint Town, who also have an ex-League of Ireland defender within their ranks in former UCD man Maxi Kouogun.
