Defender Darren Cole becomes the latest player to leave Derry City

Scottish defender Darren Cole has confirmed he has parted company with Derry City after a season-and-a-half with the Candystripes.

The versatile 26-year-old, who also played in midfield under Kenny Shiels last term, has been linked with Sligo Rovers and Irish League side Linfield in the off-season.

Following Shiels’ departure following a disappointing campaign, a number of players are expected to leave the club, with midfielders Nicky Low and Rory Hale having already filed out the exit.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with Derry City FC for the last two seasons,” Cole wrote in a statement on his Twitter account.

“I absolutely loved my time at the club and have met some amazing people along the way.

“Unfortunately the season didn’t end the way we wanted it to but nonetheless I want to thank fans for sticking with the team and I would like to thank Kenny Shiels and his backroom staff for all the work behind the scenes.

“I think Derry is an amazing city, club and the people have made me feel more than welcome. I would like to wish Declan Devine and his team all the best for the year.”

Edinburgh native Cole began his professional career with Glasgow Rangers and made his debut at the age of 18 in a Champions League group stage tie with Turkish side Bursaspor.

Cole spent time on loan with Partick Thistle before joining Greenock Morton in 2013, and he had spells with Livingston and Broxburn before joining Derry midway through the 2016 season.
