Burnley's Jimmy Dunne and Lee O'Connor of Manchester United added to Ireland squad for Denmark test

Defenders Jimmy Dunne of Hearts and Lee O’Connor of Manchester United have been added to the Republic of Ireland squad ahead of Monday’s UEFA Nations League closer against Denmark in Aarhus.

John Egan, Alan Browne and Sean Maguire have withdrawn from the squad with injury, while James McClean will miss the game due to suspension.

Dunne was named in the provisional 36-man squad ahead of Thursday’s scoreless draw with Northern Ireland amid reports he could be fast-tracked into the Northern set-up.

He was omitted from the final squad, however, as O’Neill took the opportunity to take a look at the promising 18-year-old Waterford native O’Connor, who trained with the squad but didn’t line out.

Both have now been added to the group upon the withdrawal of Egan, who was one of Ireland’s few bright spots during a dour game against Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland.

Dundalk native Dunne has starred for Hearts this season on loan from Burnley, whom he joined from Manchester United in 2017.

He scored the only goal of a summer friendly for the Clarets against Cork at Turner's Cross this year before moving to Ediunburgh on a six-month-long loan.

Ireland under-19 captain O’Connor joined the Old Trafford club in the summer of 2016 from Villa FC in Waterford.
