Shamrock Rovers defender Sean Callan signs first professional contract

Shamrock Rovers have announced a first professional contract for young centre half Sean Callan ahead of the 2019 league season.

The 19-year-old defender has worked his way up through the ranks since joining the club’s under-16 club team and is currently enjoying his fourth year at the club.

The youngster has caught the eye of Hoops Head Coach Stephen Bradley after a good year with the Under 19’s with that side reaching the league final. He also helped himself to five goals from centre half during the season.

Speaking to the club website following the announcement Callan expressed his delight as he turns his attention towards a place in the first team next season.

“2018 was a great season for the Under 19s. At the start of the year our goal was to top our group and reach the league final. That’s what we did but obviously we didn’t win it.

“I’ve played at full back a few times when needed but I’m most comfortable at centre-half. I didn’t score last year at all and I was disappointed with that so I was really happy to score five goals this year. It’s good to have as a centre-half.

“Now it’s just about working hard and seeing if I can get into the first team. The goal is to be in that starting XI for the start of the season, and if not, work hard and push whoever is ahead of me and keep improving at the same time.”

Head coach Stephen Bradley said “I’m delighted to get Sean on his first contract. He has a lot of potential and hopefully he can fulfil that with us, having him in full time and getting him working with the group.

“Sean’s been doing well for the last couple of years and he’s one that we’ve liked and had him around the first team, training on quite a few occasions.”
