Boost for Drogheda United as Tim Clancy to continue as manager

Tim Clancy will continue as Drogheda United manager next season after committing his future to the Boynesiders.

Clancy had been linked with the vacant hotseat at Shelbourne – who Drogheda knocked out of the play-off – following the departure of Owen Heary at the end of the season.

Shelbourne CEO David O'Connor is a former teammate of Clancy's at Shamrock Rovers, and the club have have the resources to attract Premier Division talent.

However Drogheda took a chance on the recently-retired Clancy at the beginning of the season and he's repaid their faith by agreeing to lead the club for a second season.

Drogheda finished fourth in the First Division last season and overcame a 1-0 first leg deficit to eliminate Shels after a penalty shoot-out at Tolka Park.

 

They came unstuck against Finn Harps in the semi-finals, however, losing 3-1 on aggregate despite taking an early lead in the home leg at United Park.

A club statement read: “Drogheda United are delighted to confirm that manager Tim Clancy will remain at the club for the 2019 season.

“The Trim native will be looking to build on a promising first season in charge with attention now turning to building next year’s squad in the coming weeks/months ahead.”



Clancy played underage football with Trim Celtic and Belvedere before signing for Millwall as a youth, but it was in Scotland that he spent the majority of his senior career.

The Meathman had spells with Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Hibernian and St Johnstone before returning to Ireland with Rovers in 2015.

He would go on to have spells with Sligo Rovers and Bray Wanderers before retiring at the end of the 2017 season to take up management.
