French striker Achille Campion parts ways with Cork City by mutual consent

Striker Achille Campion has left Cork City by mutual consent.

The Frenchman, who scored the extra-time equaliser for City in the 2017 FAI Cup final win over Dundalk, spent the first half of the season on loan with Irish Premiership side Linfield.

28-year-old Campion joined the Leesiders from Sligo Rovers ahead of the 2017 season and scored four goals in 11 appearances as City regained the title for the first time in 12 years.

“I would like to thank every member of the club and supporters for a fantastic time in Cork,” Campion told the club's website.

“I am very grateful for the fantastic opportunity I have been given here and I have cherished every minute of it.

“I leave wishing the best of luck to the club and my team mates in the future. I am glad that I will always have a place to call home in Cork.”

Manager John Caulfield added: “I have spoken to Achille since his return and, after a number of conversations, we have now agreed that he will move on.

“From a family point of view, it suits him to move on and, when we discussed it, we agreed that this was in the best interests of all parties.”

“He will, of course, be fondly remembered by all of us for scoring the equaliser in the FAI Cup final last year, which helped us on our way to the double.

“He was a very popular member of the squad during his time here and he leaves the club with our best wishes for the future.”

Campion played youth football for USL Dunkerque before moving to the United States for college at UC Santa Barbara.

He played in the USL with Baton Rouge Cardinals before joining Swedish side Norrby in 2013, and had spells with Port Vale and Torquay United in England before joining the Bit O' Red in 2016.
