Dundalk face potential Europa League showdown with four-time European Cup winners Ajax

Dundalk have the carrot of a possible match-up with four-time European Cup winners Ajax should they navigate their way past AEK Larnaca next week.

A win for the Lilywhites would see them face the loser of the Eredivisie runners-up and Austrian side Sturm Graz in the third qualifying round after the draw was made in Nyon today.

The Lilywhites face the Cypriot Cup champions at Oriel Park on Thursday before travelling for the return leg seven days later, but could already know who awaits the winner.

The draw means they've avoided potentially facing the Irish international contingent at Burnley, or former St Patrick’s Athletic midfielder Chris Forrester’s Aberdeen, who will face Istanbul Basaksehir.

Other potential opponents Dundalk could have drawn were 2016 group stage opponents Zenit St Petersburg, HNK Rijeka of Croatia or the winner of Maccabi Tel Aviv and Serbian side Radnicki Nis.
